Reconnecting With My Core Through Maya Abdominal Massage

In February 2012, I travelled to Belize to study a unique type of massage called Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy (ATMAT).  As a massage therapist for many years, I had a strong sense that I needed to explore this area for both my clients’ benefit and for my own healing. I was reminded of how disconnected I had become with my centre while I took my self-care Maya Abdominal massage training in Vermont  2012.    I felt lost in the dark, as I attempted to draw my reproductive/abdominal parts and visualize their positions and size. I learned a lot during those few days; not only about my reproductive anatomy but also about connecting to the wisdom of my uterus and the personal insight of feeling grounded once I did.

What drew me to this training in the first place was a strong sense that we store a lot of emotional energy in this area of our bodies and a realization that massage therapy often (but not always) skips the abdomen completely.  Reiki, certainly, has helped me tune in to the energy centres but now with the Maya Abdominal massage, I’ve found another missing piece of my puzzle allowing me an option that can be used to address many other health concerns. I received confirmation of this after my very first ATMAT session, both physically and emotionally and knew I was on the right path. The self- care training I experienced in Vermont was so rewarding and richly awesome that I couldn’t put off any longer the ATMAT professional training, choosing to go to Belize one year earlier than I had originally intended. The pull was undeniable.

I feel nurtured and supported by this traditional, sacred healing work and look forward to sharing it with women who are interested in connecting with their core and enhancing their health and wellness. It is offered as a supportive modality; not as an entire approach to health care. That being said, these techniques have been found to provide satisfactory results when compared to alternate treatments.  With these ATMAT tools, the goal is to support the vital flow of fluids and energy to nourish and repair the organs and systems naturally, thereby allowing the body to heal itself.

The ATMAT techniques are a non -invasive, external massage techniques applied to the abdomen and back. The massage is performed in a slow, deep, manner which helps to guide internal reproductive organs into their proper position thereby restoring balance in all five channels of flow; lymph, venous, arterial, nerve and chi. Toxins are flushed and nutrients restored to help tone tissue and balance hormones.  By softening deep muscle tissue spasms it also helps to release muscular armouring in the trunk and tension in the diaphragm. ATMAT is best known for correcting the prolapsed/tilted uterus and  relieving many common digestive and reproductive issues.

The most common symptoms that are improved by incorporating this holistic modality into one’s health care are:

  • Displaced or prolapsed uterus
  • Painful or irregular menstrual cycles or ovulation
  • Bladder or yeast infections
  • Endometriosis, polyps, uterine fibroids
  • Perimenopause, menopausal symptoms
  • Fertility challenges
  • PMS/Depression with menstruation
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Frequent urination or incontinence
  • Chronic constipation
  • Digestive disorders
  • Restricted breathing due to tension
  • Low back pain, especially with menses
  • Pelvic congestion
  • Old adhesions from hysterectomies, caesarean deliveries

Maya Abdominal massage is not recommended under certain conditions.

  • For five days prior to onset of menses and during active menstruation
  • IUD  or  pessary present
  • Immediately after abdominal surgery
  • Active infection or cancer present in pelvic area
  • Hiatal hernia
  • In the first trimester of pregnancy
  • After ovulation, if trying to conceive

Dr. Rosita Arvigo, an American naprapath, developed these techniques after apprenticing for 10 years with Don Elijio Panti, the last of the Traditional Maya Shaman in Belize, Central America.  Dr. Arvigo who has lived in Belize for the last 30 years, integrated the ancient knowledge with her modern training and developed the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy. The techniques improve the flow of blood, lymph, nerve impulses and chi to vital organs and supportive tissue, and guides the reproductive and digestive organs into optimal position. This removes underlying blockages and eliminates the primary cause of reproductive and digestive complaints thereby preventing the development of chronic conditions.
